Editing your CV...
Writing up your CV is an important step towards getting that job. Think of it as the link between you and the employer. It is the first impression that an employer sees, so it needs to be crafted with care as it is your personal marketing tool to attract employers.
It might be seen as an easy task to do, you just put all the information on paper. However, all details matter in order to catch the employer's attention.
Step 1: Create a Checklist
Sending a CV out without a careful review could lead to your CV piling up among a stuck of other candidate’s CVs. Therefore, you need some things to make it stand out. You can ask yourself if you have checked the following points.
- Have you chosen clean and powerful fonts?
- Did you use action verbs?
- Does it include a summary?
- Did you run it through spell check?
A matter of Seconds
The truth is that recruiters and hiring managers will spend literally seconds over your CV. During those seconds, they will determine if your CV is worth more time in considering you as a candidate or follow with another prospect. This is because of the numerous CVs they are collecting and the vast competition out there.
So the only thing you need to understand here is that you need to make your CV stand out. That being not only font and presentation wise but practical information as well, such as contact information, relevant skills, work history etc. Extra point goes to more thoughtful writing that includes wording that will consciously or unconsciously trigger a response from the employers.
Step 2: Research and Build
Research what the job entails! The relevant skills and requirements of each position. Search and study job descriptions to understand what they are looking for. Then craft your CV accordingly to represent your skills and attributes from the experiences you have, based on what it is required out of the job.
An employer is going through your CV to find evidence that your skills and personality match with the specific requirements of the job and with the company’s culture.
